Backyard Bar-B-Q offers a "different approach" to barbecue franchises, says Howard Kinder, owner of the latest barbecue operation in Cape Girardeau.

The store, which opened recently at 1865 Broadway, delivers freshly cooked sides of beef and sandwiches and has a window at which customers can pick up orders they telephone in.

"Consumers can also place orders at the drive-up window," said Kinder.

The meat is prepared fresh on a large grill behind the store.

Kinder, previous owner of Burger Tyme, said he wanted to move away from fast food. "It's not prefixed," he said. "We make a fresh product and you can watch us cook it. It's barbecue right off the grill."

He said Backyard Bar-B-Q fills a void in eating options in Cape Girardeau. "People were saying that you had to leave town to get good barbecue," he said.

The menu includes rib dinners, barbecue hamburgers, baked beans, and Cajun fries.

The store has 12 employees and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
