Three Southeast Missourian executives recently received awards in the Missouri Advertising Managers' Association's Best Advertising Contest sponsored by the Missouri Press Association.

Receiving awards were Teresa Hampton, Pat Zellmer and Teri Wilson.

Hampton, art director for the Creative Services Department of the Southeast Missourian, received three awards: a second, third and honorable mention in the Best Newspaper Promotion category for ads entitled "We Make a House a Home," "Man's Best Friend" and "The Best Defense is a Good Offense."

Zellmer, director of classified advertising and special projects, won two awards for Best Classified section: a second and honorable mention. She won an honorable mention for Best Special Section, "In the Swim, '91."

Wilson won a second place for best use of full four-color process in an ad for St. Francis Medical Center.

JACKSON Dr. Khonda Andrews of Andrews Chiropractic in Jackson recently completed intensive training in pre-employment health screening and occupational health-risk determination.

The seminar was designed to educate chiropractors in the Biomechanical Stress Index, a method of evaluating the risk of injury to the lower back for workers in physically demanding jobs.

The seminar was held at Logan Chiropractic College in Chesterfield. Dr. Joseph J. Sweere, director of the Department of Occupational and Community Health at Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minn., and founder of the International Academy of Chiropractic Industrial Consultants, was instructor.

Dr. Gene McDonald recently attended the Missouri Optometric Association Convention at St. Joseph. Also attending were two members of McDonald's paraoptometric staff, Nancy Rocha and Jamie Koch.

McDonald will receive continuing education credit in disorders of the retina, glaucoma therapy and oral medications for eye treatment.

Rocha and Koch each will receive continuing education credits in patient care, management inventory control and ophthalmic optics.

Robert Basler, owner of Tobacco Lane in West Park Mall, recently attended the Kansas City Gift Market, where he previewed the latest in Christmas stock and collectible items.

Basler said the store will have a good selection of fine collectible and affordable pieces for the holidays. Among new pieces will be those from Hummel, Cairn Studio, and David Winter cottages.

Melvin Van de Ven and Leslie Simmons of Schott and Co. Certified Public Accountants, attended the 1991 Accounting and Auditing Conference sponsored by the Missouri Society of CPAs Educational Foundation in St. Louis.

Topics covered were updates from the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the Auditing Standards Board, along with special accounting and disclosure procedures and problems. Also discussed were audit requirements under Office of Management and Budget's guidelines. Speakers also reviewed activity-based cost for strategic decision making.

Schott and Co. is a full-service accounting firm that adheres to the requirement of the Missouri State Board of Accountancy that each of its staff accountants have a minimum of 40 hours per year of continuing and professional education.
