BATTLEFIELD, Mo. -- Greene County authorities say a southwest Missouri man was released from custody after being held in the death of his 30-year-old son.

The Greene County Sheriff's office said the son, Craig Viles, was found Tuesday afternoon suffering from a gunshot wound when deputies went to a home in Battlefield to investigate a domestic-disturbance report.

The son died later at a hospital, and the father was taken into custody.

The sheriff's department said in a news release Wednesday the father was later released from custody. The department noted it is not unusual to delay the filing of charges until an investigation is completed, which can take weeks or months.

The sheriff's office said deputies have responded to domestic disturbance calls at the home in the past.
