The Cape Girardeau Public Library plans to celebrate National Library Week next week with a book sale and a lecture by a well-known writer.
Shirley Jordan, author of "Broken Silences: Interviews with Black and White Women Writers," will speak at 7 p.m. April 17 at the library. The lecture is free and open to the public.
In a lecture titled "Can't Keep a Good Woman Down: Lessons in Love and Healing," Jordan will look at the lives and work of several women who refused to allow hardship, misfortune or poor relationships stand in the way of their success.
Jordan has a Ph.D in English and Education and has taught at universities including the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The department of women's studies at Southeast Missouri State University is co-sponsoring the lecture, which is sponsored by the Missouri Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The book sale will run from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the library. Hardcovers will sell for $1 each, paperbacks for 25 cents and magazines for 10 cents.
Money raised will go for special programs, equipment and services at the library.
For more information, call the library at 334-5279.
