Author, lawyer Ronald Shapiro to lecture on Southeast campus, speak at First Friday Coffee

Leading sports agent, author and lawyer Ronald M. Shapiro will lecture on the Southeast Missouri State University campus today and give a presentation Friday morning for the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce.

Shapiro, who has represented baseball greats Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson, among others, is on a book tour promoting his third book, "Dare to Prepare: How To Win Before You Begin!" The book details Shapiro's methods for preparing himself for everything from a court case to sports negotiations and new business ventures.

Shapiro will speak at noon today in Glenn Auditorium of Dempster Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Shapiro's preparation methods include an eight-step process that runs from the initial creation of an idea to its completion. His book includes examples from the lives of a diverse collection of what he terms "master preparers" to illustrate his principles.

"What I try to do is recognize that the old-fashioned craft of methodical preparation can help meet the challenges in business and life," Shapiro said in a recent interview.

On Friday morning, Shapiro will make a presentation to First Friday Coffee sponsored by the chamber at the Show Me Center. The event is for chamber members and guests and is part of the chamber's annual membership drive. Doors open at 7 a.m., with the program starting 10 minutes earlier than usual at 7:40 a.m., said Tracey Glenn, chamber vice president.

"Dare to Prepare" follows up on "The Power of Nice: How to Negotiate So Everyone Wins--Especially You!," and "Bullies, Tyrants & Impossible People: How to Beat Them Without Joining Them," both of which won critical acclaim and recorded enough sales to be listed as best-sellers by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
