The Southeast Missourian asked patrons at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson how they felt about the library starting to charge fines for overdue books and materials effective July 1. Also, a $24 annual library card fee per family will go into effect for patrons living outside its service area.
Becky Davis: "I think it's fair. I used to pay to use the Cape Girardeau Library, but now I don't go there since this library has improved so much. I'll need more self-discipline in returning books so I won't pay any fines."
Mitzie Jennewein: "I think it's a good idea. People who don't return their books on time should pay a fine. It is a privilege to use the library. Any money that comes in from it will help to keep the library updated."
Donna Eakins: "I hate to see it change, but there is a need for it since there are some who abuse it. The library is a tremendous resource to the community. I use it very frequently."
Dan McNair: "I think you need to run a tight ship, and one way to do that is to charge fines for overdue books. When people keep books for as long as they want, then other people are denied the use of those books."
Lorene Burger: "I think it's fine, if that's what they have to do. I don't always get my books back on time, so I guess I'll have to get on the ball. But paying a fine would be worth it to get to read these good books."
