The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about state Rep. David Schwab's proposed amendment to Sen. Peter Kinder's Cape Girardeau-Bollinger County lake bill. Under the amendment, the lake project would first be voted on by affected property owners. If a majority of the landowners approved it, then the both county commissions would put the lake-tax issue before all voters.

Pearla Murphy: "It's only fair that the landowners have something to say first about their land. The recreational aspect of the lake is not as big an issue for me, as much as what would be fair for the landowners."

Don Livingston: "I would like to see the lake. I think it would be good for the area. However, I think the landowners should decide first on the matter. I would not have a problem with that."

Janey Miller: "I think this proposal would be the fairest way to do it. I would like to see the lake eventually, but the landowners should be able to say no, since it is their land."

Barb Maidlow: "I think the landowners should get to vote on it first, because it's their land. I would like to have the lake, but I would support their decision if they didn't want a lake."

Mike Wilson: "The lake would be a benefit to this whole area, but I still believe that a landowner has every right in the world to say what he wants to do with his land. That's better than people like me telling them what is best."
