A lovely brunch place to go would be Baristas Coffee Bar, located in the bottom of the Marquette building in Cape. The food is delicious and the coffees are beautiful and tasty. Try the Smoked Pork & Brie with apricot preserves. Trust me, it's a great combination. And just try to walk by the display case of cookies and muffins without trying one.

I liked Baristas as well. The Turkish coffee was strong and well seasoned. We all know that pretty food makes the anticipation of the actual taste that much sweeter, and the coffee here is beyond pretty. I also ordered the breakfast burrito, which was wrapped in one of the best tasting wheat wraps I have ever eaten. The plating was fresh and colorful, and everything tasted satisfying, an excellent mid-morning indulgence (including Mimosas, if you're so inclined.)

You might have heard the old saying "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper," and the statement actually has some validity -- research has shown how not skipping breakfast is key in maintaining weight loss and achieving a healthy body weight. So as a registered dietitian, I am a big fan of breakfast, brunch, or breakfast for dinner (Brinner? Brupper?) Either way, I love it. Sand's Pancake House (now located on Morgan Oak) is a Cape Girardeau staple since 1953. They offer all the traditional breakfast favorites -- home-style biscuits and gravy, crispy French toast, loaded omelets, stacks of soft, fluffy pancakes hanging off the plate (share with a friend for portion control) and, of course, hot coffee! It's a special weekend or weekday treat for the family to enjoy some good comfort cooking -- just remember -- it's cash only!

Ah, brunch... From the mimosas and Bloody Mary's to the egg benedicts and steak 'n' eggs, this late morning meal has it all! Nestled during typical "working" time, it's a meal we rarely get to enjoy so when we do it's often an occasion. On your next brunch occasion, I suggest trying Gabriel's Food and Wine in downtown Cape. This locally owned restaurant has an outstanding brunch menu and solid beverage list. They offer fresh, high-quality, and unique ingredients prepared in an open kitchen concept. For all of you drink enthusiasts, go check out Baristas' made-to-order Bloody Mary bar. Their wide variety of options allows you to customize and enhance your Mary to perfection! Happy brunching!

My favorite brunch place has to be Port Cape Girardeau. I just ate there with my family for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it was amazing. They have a brunch menu that offers classic breakfast staples along with an excellent ham-and-cheddar breakfast croissant with preserves, and a delicious breakfast pizza too!

If I'm in the mood for brunch I look no further than Hickory House in Jackson. I have a real liking for waffles, and theirs are fantastic. Sweet, simple and to the point. I get everything I need from them.
