The artistry and craftsmanship of Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great will be the focus of one of several workshops that will be offered this summer by Southeast Missouri State University's art department. The artistry and craftsmanship of Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great will be the focus of one of several workshops that will be offered this summer by Southeast Missouri State University's art department.

Sam Bishop, professor of art and secondary education, will lead the "Catherine the Great" art history workshop scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. June 10-13 and June 17-19.

The workshop is tied to the world-premier Catherine the Great Exhibition scheduled this summer in Memphis, Tenn.

Through slide lectures, discussions and research, students will investigate art during this period of Russian history. The workshop will close with a trip to Memphis June 20-21 to tour the exhibit, which includes almost 300 pieces of art work and craft objects associated with Catherine the Great. The exhibit marks the first time these pieces have left the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad.

Cost of the workshop is regular graduate or undergraduate fees plus tour expenses, which cover transportation, lodging and exhibition admission fees. Tour expenses, based on double occupancy rooms, are $50 and are due by June 4.

Experimental drawing, a two-dimensional, multi-media studio workshop, is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays July 23 to Aug. 9. The workshop will allow students to invent and discover new personal drawing solutions through experimentation with non-traditional drawing media and methods. Some previous experience with drawing and color are required.

Water color flowers will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays, July 2-29. Various assignments will be given stressing the building of compositional skills in water color media using flowers as subjects.

Computer assisted typographic design will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. weekdays July 16 to Aug. 2. The workshop will introduce the use of computers in creative typographic applications, including developing reports and newsletters. Undergraduates will focus on the basics of typography and page design. Graduate students will explore advanced applications.

Studio Loom Weaving will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays June 11-28. It will deal with the basic techniques of weaving.

Clay as an art medium will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. weekdays June 18-July 9. The workshop will explore clay as a medium for the creative expression of ideas. The workshop will involve forming, glazing and firing ceramic ware. Previous experience working with ceramic clay is recommended.
