'Music Through the Years' at The Ice in Cape

"Music Through the Years," an ice show featuring local skaters and national competitors, will be presented Saturday at The Ice at Plaza Galleria, 2001 Independence in Cape Girardeau.

Five-time national competitor Sara Booth, former Disney on Ice performer Philip Patterson and junior national ice dance skater Casey Bauer also will perform.

The exhibition is presented by the Show Me Blades of Southeast Missouri.

Shows will be at noon and 6 p.m.

Tickets are available at Schnucks in Cape Girardeau or at the door.

Diebenkorn, Thiebaud works in exhibit

ST. LOUIS -- An installation of works by Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud, two of the most influential American artists of the last 40 years, goes on display Wednesday at the St. Louis Art Museum.

"Titled "Diebenkorn/ Thiebaud Works on Paper," the exhibit continues through Sept. 28.

Diebenkorn was associated with the Bay Area figurative movement in the 1950s and 1960s, a group who turned away from post-war abstract expressionism. Thiebaud has been loosely linked with Pop Art. Both worked for many years at the same printmaking studio, Crown Point Press.

Summer classes offered by arts council

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is registering students for its 28th annual season of summer arts classes.

Country concert to benefit American Cancer Society

The fourth annual Classy Chassy Country Concert to Cure Cancer will be held May 17 at the Masonic Temple, 2307 Broadway in Cape Girardeau.

Featured performers will be Anna Ayers, June Benson, Walt Wilburn, the Dissidents, Jo-Jo The Clown and Classy Chassy Country.

The concert will last from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. They will be forwarded to the American Cancer Society in Cape Girardeau.

French Heritage Festival May 17-18

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- The seventh annual French Heritage Festival will be held May 17-18, offering street theater, French foods, street dancing, a wine garden, interpretive exhibits, lectures and music.

Musicians will include Dennis Stroughmatt and his Cajun Stomp, Poor People of Paris, and Jim Stemmler. Townspeople will don French Colonial period dress.

The festival will start at 11:30 a.m. May 17 with a grand promenade escorting "Pere Marquette and voyageurs" to the historic town square.

Central High School orchestras to perform

The Central High School Freshman Orchestra and the Central High School Orchestra will give their final concert of the school year May 19.

The 7 p.m. concert will be performed at the high school Commons.

'Summer Science Blast' offered in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- "Summer Science Blast" day camps are scheduled for the St. Louis Science Center beginning June 16 and continuing through early August.

First-graders can choose form eight different half-day camp courses, including "The Amazing Amazon," "Let's Get Moving," "Don't Drink the Water," "How I Work," "Trash to Treasures," "Eco-logic," "Color My World" and "Tasty Treasures." Second- through fifth-graders can experience programs focuses on astronomy, biology, archaeology and architecture.

MAC seeking design for 2004 awards

ST. LOUIS -- Missouri artists are invited to submit design proposals for the 2004 Missouri Arts Awards given by the Missouri Arts Council.

One artist will be selected to design the five awards to be presented next year at the annual ceremony in Jefferson City.

Submissions must be postmarked by June 30. Artists must submit an application form, sketches, a typed letter describing their ideas, images and a resume. The artist will be given a budget for the project.

Twangfest 7 June 4-7 in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Twangfest 7 will be held June 4-7 in St. Louis.

The roots music/Americana festival offers nightly music marathons, picnics, movie festivals and a bowling tournament.

Headliners include Scott Miller and the Commonwealth, Dale Watson and His Lonestars, Bobby Bare Jr., Tim Easton, the Gibson Brothers, Steve Wynn and the Miracle Three and Diesel Island (featuring Brian Henneman of the Bottle Rockets).

The June 4 shows will be held at the Tap Room of the Schlafly Brewery, 2100 Locust. The June 5-7 shows will be held at the Duck Room, downstairs at Blueberry Hill, 6504 Delmar in University City.

Chinese Culture Days May 17-18

ST. LOUIS -- Chinese Culture Days will be held May 17-18 at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Acrobats, puppet storytellers and a 70-foot dancing dragon will be among the unique entertainment presented. A parade will be held at 2 p.m. each day.

The New Shanghai Circus Troupe will perform, artists and craftsmen will demonstrate calligraphy and Chinese painting, and fashion shows of traditional styles worn by the Chinese will be presented.

The garden is located at 4344 Shaw Boulevard.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
