Arkansas man charged with bringing marijuana into jail

An Arkansas man faces a charge of felony possession of a controlled substance inside a jail facility after a corrections officer found marijuana in his wallet, the Scott County Sheriff's Department reported.

Arron McCrary, 24, of Truman, Ark., was being transferred Friday to the Scott County Jail from a correctional facility in Arkansas when a corrections officer found the marijuana during an inventory of McCrary's property, said Capt. Kenneth Kinder of the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

McCrary was arrested in Arkansas on an outstanding warrant for second-degree burglary, Kinder said.

Bond was set at $1,000 for the new charge, according to a news release from the department.

People need to realize if they try to smuggle contraband into a jail, they will be caught, Kinder said.

"All these attempts to smuggle stuff into a correctional facility -- it's kind of a prevalent thing -- people on the outside and people on the inside both," he said.

Kinder said authorities in Arkansas didn't notice the marijuana when McCrary was arrested.

He praised the Scott County officer who found the drug.

"Our guys are doing their job … and they're good at it, and they're finding stuff," Kinder said. "That's what these guys get paid to do, and they do a good job. Corrections doesn't get a lot of credit. They're not the glory boys of law enforcement. It's a job a lot of people wouldn't want to do or won't do."

Court records show McCrary was sentenced to five years of supervised probation after he pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary in 2008.

His probation was suspended in December, and a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear for a Jan. 16 probation status hearing, court records show.
