The Area Wide United Way kicked off Community Volunteer Month April 1 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. The mayors of Cape Girardeau, Jackson, and mayor pro tem of Scott City each signed a proclamation declaring April as a month focusing on community volunteerism.
Nancy Jernigan, executive director of the Area Wide United Way, commented on the importance of volunteerism and encouraged everyone in the community to get involved. She also pointed out that studies show that volunteerism improves the quality of life and may even help extend life.
Following the signing of the proclamations, Mayor Jay Knudtson of Cape Girardeau, Mayor Paul Sander of Jackson, and Mayor Pro Tem Joe McDaniels of Scott City stayed and served lunch to over 100 seniors at the center. Plans are in the works to do the same in the Jackson and Scott City senior centers.
The United Way will celebrate volunteerism throughout the month in the following ways:
Promoting volunteerism in their respective high schools by coordinating activities at the Boys & Girls Club and Veterans Home.
Celebrating the volunteer activities of others.
Celebrating current volunteers through the 16th annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on April 29 at Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. This event will spotlight nominated volunteers and honor four special volunteers.
Locally the Volunteer Intergenerational Center coordinates volunteer activities for anyone interested. Reach them by calling 335-7555.
The Area Wide United Way serves as the leader in uniting people and resources around health and human service issues to build a stronger, healthier community.
Over 44 programs locally are funded with donations from the annual campaign which raised over $928,000 in 2002. Call 334-9634 or visit their Web site at www.areawideunitedway.org for more information.
