Sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital, the Area Wide United Way held a luncheon on Aug. 14 for local media in appreciation for the major contribution they make each year helping to promote the work of the United Way throughout the year.

With no funds budgeted for paid advertising, the United Way relies heavily on local media.

"Many people don't realize the contribution of our local media. It can be valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars range," said Nancy Jernigan, executive director of the Area Wide United Way. Another point made at the luncheon was the way in which all local media join forces to promote the United Way and many other causes for the common good of the community.

Due to the increased need for services and the decrease in available funds, media support is needed more than ever to relay the United Way message to the public, especially during the annual campaign. The local media has willingly donated many hours, talent and equipment to provide a coordinated effort of delivering the message: United Way Changes Lives.

The United Way is preparing to kick off its annual fund-raising drive today at a luncheon at Cape West Cine 14 where entertainment will be provided by the Blues Brothers.

A total of $928,000 was raised in the 2002 campaign.
