The Area Wide United Way has announced $575,500 in allocations from funds raised during the 2001 campaign in the Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City areas. The campaign raised more than $890,000.

Thirty-one organizations will receive funding to support 47 specific programs. These programs provide a variety of services to meet critical community needs, said Nancy Jernigan, executive director of the Area Wide United Way.

The United Way emphasizes the significant impact local contributions have on local issues, added Jernigan. "Through the generosity of the community, there is a real opportunity to make a difference and impact the lives of our neighbors."

All local funds are used in the local area, Jernigan emphasized.

Jernigan said some funds have been set aside for one-time grants, which will be awarded this spring.

The one-time grants will focus on four areas of need -- transportation, affordable housing, youth substance abuse and assistance for low-ncome families, said Jernigan, who added that donations are still welcome for the 2001 campaign.
