Areas of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois remain under a freezing advisory until 10 a.m. today. Freezing rain and drizzle that fell throughout the early morning hours is expected to continue to expand north and east across the advisory area this morning.
Affected areas include the Missouri counties of Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott, Stoddard and Wayne and the Illinois county of Alexander. Temperatures are at or below 32 degrees throughout the entire area, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will remain steady through sunrise and then begin to slowly warm above 32 degrees later in the morning.
Some light icing has been reported in various parts of the advisory area, forcing black ice conditions, slick roads and hazardous driving and walking. The Cape Girardeau Police Department has received numerous reports of slick bridges and overpasses.
The wintry weather has also forced area schools to cancel classes for Thursday. One such school is Jackson R-II district, whose superintendent Dr. Ron Anderson said enough precipitation fell to make the side streets to slick.
"It was too risky," Anderson said. "We didn't want to take a chance with all of our students possibly injuring themselves."
