Area students are participating this week in the 1991 session of the American Legion Boys State of Missouri on the campus of Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg.
Boys State is a democracy; all citizens may vote and are eligible to hold office.
The event has been sponsored since 1938 by the American Legion of Missouri, and 986 boys from the state are expected to attend this year.
The following participants have all just completed their junior year in high school.
Travis Austin, 17, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Trinity Lutheran Church youth group and Young Life. He won the "I Dare You" leadership award and was elected senior-class treasurer for 1992. He is the son of Ed and Margaret Austin, 911 Rodney Vista.
Paul Cairns, 16, a student at Central High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel and youth group, Young Life, and was elected senior-class president. He is the son of Richard and Lynne Cairns, 1541 Saratoga.
Brandon Hahs, 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Young Life, Chamber Choir, Show Choir, the varsity swim team and St. Andrew Lutheran Church. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Hahs, 3237 Lakewood.
Darren Allcock, 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, Student Council, "Who's Who Among American High School Students," band, First Baptist Church and youth choir, and is an Eagle Scout. He is the son of Michael and Ruth Ann Allcock, 1924 Briarwood.
Robert G. Marietta, 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of the swim team and the orchestra. He is a Life Boy Scout with Troop 10 in Cape Girardeau. He is the son of William and Anne Marietta, 1577 Saratoga.
David Kinder, 16, a student at Central High School, is a member of the varsity soccer and tennis teams, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Chamber Choir, Show Choir, Young Life, Centenary Methodist Church and youth fellowship. He was elected vice-president of the senior class. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Kinder, Route 2 White Oaks.
Curt Cauble, 17, a student at Scott City High School, is a member of Students Against Driving Drunk, Future Business Leaders of America, Scholar Bowl, the wrestling team and is an Eagle Scout. He is the son of James and Carolyn Cauble of Scott City.
Keith Russell, 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of the varsity tennis team and the Red Dagger drama club. He is the son of Keith and Margaret Russell, 2005 Evergreen.
Nathan Seyer, 17, a student at Notre Dame High School, is a member of the student council, and the varsity soccer team. He is the son of Michael and Brenda Seyer, 2031 Beth.
John Hillin, 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of the football and track teams, and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was named honorable mention defensive back in football. He is the son of Jim and Anita Hillin, 3131 Laurel Lane.
Ken Pemberton Jr., 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, "Who's Who Among American High School Students," St. Vincent Catholic Church, the football and baseball teams, Lettermen's Club and Latin Club. He is the son of Ken and Brenda Pemberton, 2504 Hilltop Lane.
Clint Tracy, 17, a student at Central High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Young Life, Beta Club and the Lettermen's Club. He is the son of Brian and Debbie Tracy, 689 Highland.
Benjamin Glaus, 17, a student at Notre Dame High School, is a member of the varsity soccer and baseball teams and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church. He is the son of Norman and Diana Glaus, Cape Girardeau Route 2.
Chris Hutson, 16, a student at Jackson High School, is a member of the Burfordville Baptist Church, Future Business Leaders of America, Boy Scout Troop 311, the All-District and All-State bands and Ducks Unlimited. He is the son of Charles P. Hutson Jr. and Linda K. Hutson of Jackson.
Kent Tranter, 16, a student at Jackson High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Hi-Step, Students Against Driving Drunk, band, Future Business Leaders of America and runs track and cross country. He is also a member of Boy Scout Troop 311. He is the son of Wes and Babs Tranter of Jackson.
Timothy J. Miller, 17, a student at Jackson High School, is a member of National Honor Society, Students Against Driving Drunk, Future Business Leaders of America, the speech team, peer tutor program. He runs cross country and track and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 311. He is the son of Thomas and Theresa Miller of Millersville.
