The academy, now in its ninth year, is to provide gifted students with an intensive, challenging learning experience that cannot be matched in a regular high school. Participants in Scholars Academy are chosen on the basis of test scores, evidence of leadership and creativity, grades and personal essays.

Each public and private high school in the state is eligible to nominate at least one student for the academy.
