Area motorist dies from injuries suffered in wreck

A New Madrid, Mo., woman died late Monday morning from injuries she received Sept. 19 when her truck hit a train in Pemiscot County.

Laura Hunter, 59, died at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Train driver Gregory Hency, 42, of Benton, Mo., was not injured.

The accident occurred on Route A, four miles east of Wardell, Mo. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a train from Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway was southbound traveling through a signaled crossing when Hunter failed to stop at the crossing. Her truck struck one of the rail cars in the train.

The crossing was equipped with a light and bell combination signal device.
