Baseball's spring training may be two weeks away, but right now, winter is still running the show, and it isn't ready to let it go just yet.

David Humphrey, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, said Cape Girardeau could see some short-lived snow this week.

Meteorologists expect about half an inch to fall on Southeast Missouri tonight as temperatures drop from the high 40s into the upper teens, with some areas receiving only trace amounts and others seeing accumulations up to an inch, Humphrey said.

Snow is expected to start around nightfall, ending shortly after midnight, he said.

Accumulations shouldn't be heavy enough to create any serious problems for drivers, Humphrey said.

Below-freezing temperatures Thursday will keep the snow around for a few hours, but after the brief cold snap -- with an anticipated high of 30 and a low of 19 -- the weather will warm up again, melting the snow as the temperature climbs to a high of 42 Friday, he said.

"You just keep warming up into the weekend," Humphrey said. "In fact, you're back into the 50s Saturday."

The weekend weather should be relatively pleasant, aside from a small chance of rain late Saturday or early Sunday, he said.
