Applicants are being sought for scholarship and awards programs offered through the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its auxiliaries.
Nov. 15 is the deadline for entries in the Voice of Democracy contest. Awards for the taped essay competition will be given at the local, district, state and national levels. Topic is "Answering America's Call."
Seventh- through ninth-graders may participate in the essay program. Deadline is March 15, and the topic is "My American Hero."
Application deadline for the Youth Volunteer of the Year for students ages 12-15 is April 15. The patriotic art contest is open to students in grades nine through 12. Deadline is May 1.
The VFW also sponsors an Americanism Contest, a coloring contest, for students in preschool through third grade. A poster contest is open to students in grades four through six, and students in grades seven through nine are eligible to compete in the essay contest. Deadline is April 1 for both.
Other awards include a hospital volunteer award for students 15 through 18, the James H. Parke Award Scholarship for student hospital volunteers, and the Missouri Past National President Scholarship for high school seniors who are the children or grandchildren of Missouri VFW or auxiliary members.
Glynetta Vogelsang of VFW Post 3838's auxiliary said more information is available through local schools. Interested people may call 335-6203 or their local VFW post.
