A group of anonymous donors and longtime sponsor Plaza Tire Service have come forward to keep the Cape Girardeau Capahas amateur baseball team funded for the upcoming season.

On April 8, longtime team manager Jess Bolen announced an end to Plaza Tire's 10-year sponsorship and said new sponsorship would have to be found soon for the team to play, as its season begins June 1.

In a news release Saturday, Mark Rhodes, president of Plaza Tire, said the business would collaborate with local leaders to keep the Capahas on the field in 2014.

"We think that the Capahas, and their history, are a community treasure," he said in the news release. "That is why we have provided sponsorship for more than 10 years. But the team needs a long-term plan to remain viable."

Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger stated his appreciation for the decision made by Plaza Tire Service and the anonymous donors to step forward.

"Cape Girardeau would not be the same without a summer of Capahas baseball playing in Capaha Park," he said.

The Capahas, one of the oldest amateur baseball teams in the nation, began in 1894. Bolen and his wife Mary have led the team since 1967, and have helped lead the Capahas to 32 consecutive appearances in the NBC World Series.

Bolen said in the news release he appreciates the "tremendous support" from Plaza Tire Service and "several local baseball lovers."

"This year's season is no longer in jeopardy," Bolen said.
