In hopes of drawing bigger crowds, organizers are moving the annual Scott City yard sale up to June 8 and 9.

Since the annual yard sale started nine years ago, it has been held in September over Labor Day Weekend.

"We're trying to beat the heat and give people an opportunity to do some earlier spring cleaning to get rid of things," organizer Chaundra Mason said. "It's been such pretty weather, we didn't want to wait until it got too hot."

Changing the date also avoids competition with the U.S. 61 yard sales, which are also held Labor Day weekend.

The annual sale is sponsored by Scott City Women's Club and the Scott City Chamber of Commerce. In the past there have been 30 to 50 different sales held throughout the city.

"We've had people sell motorcycles, cars, furniture, even big-ticket items. It's not just clothes. It's a good variety of merchandise," Mason said.

People don't have to be Scott City residents to sell items, either, she said.

Booth space is available for $20 in the caboose parking lot on Main Street and for the first time this year indoor, air-conditioned booth space will be offered. This area will be inside the First Assembly of God fellowship hall at 312 Dearborn St., and can be reserved for $30. Tables and chairs will be supplied.

Mason said several other churches were participating and their members planned to fill their fellowship halls with items for sale.

"I think it's going to be very good this year. We've had a lot of people wanting to do it and they're excited about setting up," she said.
