ANNA, Ill. -- A former state trooper who has been involved in operations at city hall here the past eight years four as a councilman and four as mayor and a retired sales manager for Bunny Bread here will square off in the city's mayoral election here Tuesday.
Incumbent Ken Kohler, 68, is seeking his second term as mayor.
"I'm accustomed to challenges," said Kohler, who was a member of the Illinois State Police for 27 years.
Kohler is a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro High School. In 1941, he joined the Army. He was awarded a Purple Heart and an Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds received during the war, and a Bronze Star for bravery.
He was elected to the Anna City Council eight years ago, and as mayor four years ago.
Amon Lee "A.L." Jackson, 64, has spent many hours during the campaign going door-to-door in an effort to gain votes.
Jackson, also a native of Union County, has lived in the Anna area most of his life.
He served aboard the USS Washington while in the Navy during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific and European theaters.
He started work for Lewis Brothers (Bunny Bread) Bakery in 1948, as a route salesman. He was appointed sales manager within two years, a position he held for 26 years.
Jackson served on the Anna School District 37 Board of Education for nine years.
A total of 10 candidates are on the ballot here. Besides the mayor's race, eight candidates will be seeking four council seats, including three incumbents Roy Dillow, David Tellor and Glenn Rosson. Other council candidates include Lawrence Boyer, Allen W. James, Richard L. Tweedy, Ray Plott, and Albert Lence.
In nearby Jonesboro, three candidates for aldermen Bruce Bauer, Brad Penninger, and Mike Meisenheimer are running unopposed.
City elections will be held throughout Southern Illinois Tuesday.
Six candidates will be seeking three trustee positions at Tamms, but there are no contests in elections at Thebes and East Cape Girardeau. Four candidates will be seeking four positions mayor and three trustees at Thebes. Only three candidates filed for the three positions at East Cape Girardeau.
Two incumbents Van Dillow and Carl Hileman will be seeking re-election to the Tamms board. Current member Don Allen did not file for re-election.
Other trustee candidates at Tamms include Darold Dunning, Sharon Hesselmeyer, Larry S. Essex, and Dudley Crayton. The next mayoral election will be in 1993. Mayor Walter Pang was elected to a four-year term in 1989.
David D. McNeely, who is currently serving as Thebes mayor pro tem, will be the only candidate for mayor. He was appointed by the Thebes Village Board of Trustees as mayor pro tem following the death of Mayor John Masterson.
The terms of three trustees Clyde Dunn, Billie Walsh Howard and Ray Dodson expire this year. Dunn and Walsh have filed for re-election. The third candidate is Blanche Prater.
McNeely is also one of three trustees whose terms do not expire this year. Following the election, the board will appoint someone to fill McNeely's unexpired trustee term.
There is no mayoral election at East Cape Girardeau, where Mayor Joe Aden still has two years remaining in his term. Incumbents Donnie Joe Kaufman, James Lingle and William Colyer are running unopposed for re-election to the town's board of trustees.
