Ameritech brings name to Cape CyberTel

Ameritech Cellular is arriving in Cape Girardeau today.

Ameritech, a provider of communications services, has converted its CyberTel operations into the Ameritech name.

The name change explains why those geese have been flying in a lazy arc in newspaper ads appearing in the Southeast Missourian. Other ads show the St. Louis Arch on its side.

The shape of the geese flying in the arc and of the Arch on its side corresponds to part of Ameritech's corporate symbol.

Ameritech purchased CyberTel three years ago.

Today's announcement that Ameritech Cellular is here is a signal that something has changed, says Linda Wokoun, vice president and Missouri marketing manager.

Ameritech's Cape Girardeau headquarters is located at 500 N. Kingshighway.

During the three years that Ameritech has owned CyberTel, the company has tripled its cellular towers and its customer base.

Several new services will be provided under Ameritech, including a personal number service, which will ring a customer in the office, car or at home. This service is already available in Chicago and will debut in Missouri soon.

Ameritech cellular customers will also benefit from credit-card billing options, 24-hour customer service and an international roaming system by January.

Ameritech, which pioneered cellular technology when it launched the nation's first cellular network more than 10 years ago, has 1993 revenues of almost $12 billion. The company, which also offers paging services in the St. Louis metropolitan area, employs more than 400 people throughout Missouri.
