The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center accepted a donation from American Legion Auxiliary Brown-Mabry Unit 153 to purchase food for the medical center's Care and Share Program, which provides veterans in need with all the ingredients needed for a robust holiday meal.

"It takes about $35 to prepare a complete package for each veteran," said VA Voluntary Service Officer, Dale Garrett. "Last year we distributed 225 baskets, and this year we are hoping to increase that number to 300."

Garrett explained the income requirements to receive a Care and Share package are strict enough those who receive the food items really need them.

"I've had veterans tell me they freeze the ham in small packages and make it last until February," he said. "They really know how to stretch the food."

VA will be accepting Care and Share applications through Nov. 8. Applications must be completed by or signed by the recipient veteran and may be picked up at nearly any medical center office, community clinic (in Missouri --Farmington, Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, West Plains) or by calling Voluntary Services at (573) 778-4276.

"We very much appreciate the donation from the American Legion Auxiliary," said Interim Medical Center Director, Desmond McMullan. "I know the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center has a long history with this organization and they have been supporting veterans' causes for years. Obviously, they care deeply about our veterans."
