Students at the Cape Girardeau Alternative Education Center received recognition for their work during an awards ceremony Wednesday.

Awards were given for academic and social achievements during the ceremony, which took place at the Cape Civic Center, 232 Broadway, where the alternative school is housed. Certificates of achievement were donated by the Navy.

Trisha Renschen and Robert Hinck were recognized by the faculty as the most improved students at the school. Faculty selected the two students for their achievements in academics, attitude and attendance during the year.

Tiesha Johnson, Renschen and Hinck were also honored by Dr. Jerell Driver for their work with Missouri ASSIST, an anti-smoking program which trains older students to speak to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders. The three students made anti-smoking presentations to students at May Greene Elementary School.

-- Candy Seaworth and Quita Bell received top honors in the Learn to Earn program.

-- LaDawn Hogan and Sherri Loughary received awards for their work in English.

-- Trisha Renshen and George Stinson were honored for their achievements in social studies.

-- Adam Holloway and Tiesha Johnson received awards for their achievements in science.

-- Anthony Short and Lakita Johnson received math awards.
