JACKSON -- Jackson Mayor Paul Sander said the city took a big step toward orderly growth Monday night when they approved a contract with Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission to update the city's comprehensive plan.
The contract was unanimously approved and will cost the city between $25,000 to $30,000 over the six to nine months of the project.
Southeast Missouri Regional Planning will take the input of everyone from city council members, local businesspersons and city residents as they designate the best areas of growth in the city and plan traffic routes.
"They'll do exactly what we want them to do," Sanders said. "They'll make maps, a master street plan which will plan for future streets. They map the areas of the most likely and least likely areas for growth and they'll advise us on future water and sewer systems. The comprehensive plan is the most important aspect of orderly growth and we intend to use this one."
Sander said the project's planners should meet with the city council at a study session sometime within the next two weeks. After that surveyors, engineers and planners will descend on the city to begin their work.
The plan will be completed in a piecemeal fashion, Sander said, and take input from the current comprehensive plan and the city's subdivision plan.
The city's current comprehensive plan is 15 years old and no longer viable, Sander said. As Southeast Missouri Regional progresses it will conduct public meetings to inform Jackson's residents and acquire additional input into the project.
"This is the biggest project we've had in a long time and the one that has required the most work from the council," he said.
