Aging Stoddard County Courthouse needs major renovations

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- A Southeast Missouri courthouse built just five years after the end of the Civil War needs a major overhaul.

Presiding Stoddard County Commissioner Greg Mathis said the dome that graces the structure is of particular concern. Over the years, there have been water leaks, and damage is evident from an early fire.

Mathis said the structure has undergone many repairs over the years. Now, he said it's time for a major renovation "if it is to remain a figure of pride."

Efforts are being made to find money to pay for some of the work. But Mathis said the economy makes this a tough time to be looking for funding.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's unclear whether that will place restrictions upon the work that needs to be done.
