Local high schools are organizing efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Students at Notre Dame Regional High School in Cape Girardeau approached Brother David Migliorino about contributing to the hurricane relief effort. The student council and the entire school have adopted Redeemer Seton High School in New Orleans as well as the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Two years ago Notre Dame students went on a mission trip to help paint and clean the Redeemer Seton High School.
The student council will hold pancake suppers and dress-down days once a month at Notre Dame to raise money to send to them.
"We have heard that the school is under water and we are trying to locate them," Migliorino said. Notre Dame will also collect money at its sporting events.
Migliorino has also contacted schools in New York to have them send the contributions to Notre Dame so they can be added to their relief funds.
Eagle Ridge Christian School in Cape Girardeau will be holding a class competition to see which class can raise the most money for the American Red Cross.
"We will be encouraging our teachers to incorporate why they are collecting the money into their lessons plans," said Michelle Hahn, community relations spokeswoman for Eagle Ridge.
Saxony Lutheran High School has adopted a Lutheran High School in New Orleans to receive the money they raise. The school was also working to enroll students from the affected area into Saxony so they can continue classes. While they are adopting the students, they are also going to work with families that may need a place to stay or work during the rebuilding time. Saxony will also raise money during their sporting events.
Jackson High School's Student Council and the Jackson Fire Department will be working together to collect money at their football game Saturday. The money will be presented to their opponent at the end of the game. Jackson will also hold other fund raisers throughout the coming weeks to raise money for the Red Cross.
Students at Cape Central High School have organized a general donation collection during Back-to-School night Thursday evening to give parents a chance to contribute and will be collecting funds from students throughout the rest of the week during classes. Future Business Leaders of America are also organizing a relief effort on their own.
Representatives from Scott City High School were unavailable to comment.
