The accident occurred one mile north of Cape Girardeau around 2:50 a.m. as a 2001 Mercury driven by a 15-year-old girl from Cape Girardeau ran off the road and struck a tree. The vehicle was totaled.

The girl and passenger, Donald E. Welker, 18, were taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center and treated for moderate injuries.
