Roberts was reported Monday night in guarded condition following surgery. She was conscious and breathing on her own, a family member said. She is expected to have further surgery on her hand today, the family member said.

The patrol said a preliminary investigation showed the accident occurred when the car driven by Voss crossed the centerline and struck the Sachse car head-on.

Sachse and Roberts were returning home from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Sachse attended the wedding of her nephew.
