A 73-year-old bicyclist struck by a car Tuesday nearly went through the vehicle's windshield, a Cape Girardeau police spokesman said.

Traffic was snarled near William Street and Interstate 55 for about an hour as police investigated the accident, which sent the bicyclist to Saint Francis Medical Center with serious injuries, Sgt. Barry Hovis said.

Joseph V. Greene, 30, of Jefferson City, Mo., was westbound on William Street approaching Siemers Drive when he struck the bicycle ridden by John Campbell of Cape Girardeau, Hovis said. When the car struck Campbell, he went into and almost through the windshield.

"He put a hole in the windshield and caved it in," Hovis said.

Investigators spent about an hour reconstructing the scene before it could be cleared, he said. Traffic was stopped briefly by the accident.

No citations had been issued as of late Friday afternoon. Saint Francis Medical Center declined to give a report on Campbell's condition.
