SCOTT CITY -- Walter Rogers, 71, of Sikeston has been charged in an incident of "road rage" that ended in front of the Scott City police station Friday.
Rogers was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action by Scott County prosecutors Friday for an incident that began on northbound Interstate 55 between Sikeston and Benton.
He is being held at Scott City Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.
Rogers is accused of repeatedly bumping his Dodge Ram pickup into a Pontiac Trans Am occupied by a female driver and passenger from Illinois.
It was previously reported the driver of the Trans Am was a male.
Officers learned of the incident Friday afternoon when the driver of the Trans Am contacted 911 from her cell phone. She was told to exit the interstate at Scott City, and as she did so the pickup followed. The bumping continued after both vehicles turned onto Main Street in Scott City, and ended when the Trans Am was forced into a ditch in front of the police station. A third vehicle, a Ford, pickup, also was struck at that point.
The driver and passenger of the Trans Am were taken to St. Francis Medical Center with back and neck injuries, where they were treated and released.
Officer Jackie Wilson, the Scott City police officer investigating the case, said Saturday there appeared to be no provocation that sparked the incident. "The only thing we can determine from his statement is that they passed him on the interstate," he said.
