Six years ago, Bob Harper and his wife saw an interesting ad.
Touting a project called "55-Alive", the ad described a driving class for mature drivers. Harper and his wife signed up for the class and, after completing the program, were pleased with what they learned. By the end of his second session, Harper had volunteered his time as an instructor for the course.
Harper, a resident of Jackson, has been coaching the class since his first experience with the "55 Alive" program six years ago. The class, sponsored by the American Association for Retired Persons, is taught at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau and entails helping senior citizens compensate for driving skills that may have been lost or diminished. Harper and other instructors concentrate on offsetting changes in eyesight, hearing, reaction times, and other essential driving skills.
All instruction for the "55 Alive" course is given in a classroom and is divided into two four-hour sessions. Total cost for the program is $8.00.
"The classes," said Harper, "even though they cost a little, are worth it. Besides helping with driving skills and safety, some insurance companies, including AARP, give a discount for the class."
Harper's next "55 Alive" class is scheduled for July 9 and 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Southeast Missouri Hospital. More information concerning sign-ups and classes can be obtained by calling Harper at 243-2396 or writing to Bob Harper, 55-Alive Mature Driving, 211 Sanford St., Jackson MO 63755.
