SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Authorities have defused three small, homemade bombs that turned up in the Springfield area, including one that was placed in a mailbox.
The items were found Friday in Greene County. Sheriff's deputies said it was too early to say if the incidents were related.
A homeowner in southwestern Springfield told KOLR-TV he called 911 after opening his mailbox around 1 p.m. Friday and seeing a suspicious bottle under some paper.
Authorities said the plastic bottle was swelling by the time they got there. The Springfield Bomb Squad used a special long-arm tool to remove it from the mailbox.
Details on the other two homemade bombs weren't immediately available.
