An unused chair or table may send a child to camp this summer. That's one of the goals of the second annual Salvation Army Auction on Friday.
Darrell McIntyre Jr., president of the Salvation Army Men's Club, said funds raised from the auction in the Salvation Army gymnasium at 701 Good Hope will help send area children to Salvation Army camps, Special Olympic camps and other children's camps. Forty children were sent to camps last year.
In addition to the camps, auction proceeds will send 15 men to the National Promise Keepers meeting in St. Louis. Promise Keepers is a non-denominational national group of men who stand on the values of the Bible.
It costs the Salvation Army $70 per child to send to camp and $190 a man to send to the Promise Keepers meeting.
Proceeds from the auction will also benefit the Salvation Army's Girl and Boy Scout troops' Guards, Sunbeams and Venture clubs.
Auction donations have doubled from last year.
McIntyre said, "Local businesses have given certificates, oil changes, coupons for dinners and produce."
The auction, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will have a concession stand during the auction.
L.R. Brandes Auction service will conduct the sale.
To donate, call 335-7000, or drop off auction items at 701 Good Hope.
