Louie M. Snider, one of three Democrats seeking the nomination for State Senate from the 25th district this year, has a slight lead in campaign receipts for the Aug. 4 primary election. Louie M. Snider, one of three Democrats seeking the nomination for State Senate from the 25th district this year, has a slight lead in campaign receipts for the Aug. 4 primary election.

According to campaign reports due last week to reflect the period 40 days before the primary, the Poplar Bluff businessman had raised $38,281.15.

By comparison, Bill Black, a Malden attorney, reported total contributions of $4,650; incumbent Sen. Jerry Howard of Dexter had raised $3,356.04 through a recently formed committee known as the Bootheel Democratic Education Committee, and $29,289.70 from his Friends of Jerry Howard Committee, for a total of $32,645.74.

Howard has used his Friends committee in previous campaigns. After serving two terms in the House, Howard won the 25th district Senate seat in December of 1990 following the resignation of Steve Sharp to take a circuit judgeship.

The Friends of Jerry Howard Committee lists outstanding indebtedness of $27,036.02 from the last Senate race.

Snider's total receipts include $19,000 in personal loans he has made to the campaign committee. In addition, Snider's receipts include what are identified as $7,916.15 worth of in-kind contributions he made to the campaign on six occasions, ranging from a high of $6,150 to a low of $42.36.

Snider's report indicates that he has spent $32,998.01 and has $3,038.14 in his account.

Howard's Friends committee lists total expenditures of $28,612.92 and a balance of $1,718.04. In May he borrowed $9,499.32 from Mercantile Bank of Dexter for his campaign account.

Howard's Bootheel committee lists total expenditures of $241.09 and a balance in his account of $3,114.95.

Black lists expenditures of $4,646.31 and has a balance in his account of $3.69. He loaned the committee $4,200. Other major contributors to Black's campaign are: W.J. Provance of Malden, $100, and Raymond Lee of Campbell, $100.

Snider's largest contributors have been Ben Bidewell and Lora Tinnin, both from Poplar Bluff, who have give $1,000 each.

Contributing $500 each were: Dr. David R. Bean, Alvin H. Bess, Shirley M. Luecke, Sam Schalk, and Lucy Lee Hospital, all of Poplar Bluff.

Other large contributions listed on the 40-day report are: Daniel R. Coffman of Poplar Bluff, $300; Jaspar Edmundson of Poplar Bluff, $250; the MERC PAC of St. Louis, $250; Fred J. Biggs, Edward P. Cannon and Randall Hillis, all of Poplar Bluff, $200 each; Carl Richardson of Malden, $200; and Ray Robertson of Quilin, $200.

Howard had a total of 10 contributions to his Bootheel committee, all from either corporations or political action committees. His largest donation was $1,000 from Anheuser Busch Companies, Inc.

He also received $500 each from the Missouri State U.A.W., based in Bridgeton, and the Motor Carrier Public Affairs Committee, based in Sugar Creek; and $400 from the Southwestern Bell Employee PAC, based in St. Louis.

Other contributions listed by Howard include: General Telephone Management Employees Good Government Club of Columbia, $250; Dealers Interested in Government of Jefferson City, $125; Savings Association PAC of Jefferson City, $125; Missouri Optometric PAC of Jefferson City, $100; and MPMA PAC of Jefferson City, $100.

Howard also lists an in-kind contribution of $106.04 from Richard Wiles and Associates of Jefferson City.

The Friends committee's largest contribution came from Jarrell Group, Inc. of Malden, with $1,000. Dalton Petroleum, Inc. of Hayti, contributed $600, Jack Davis of Caruthersville contributed $500, MERC PAC of Dexter gave him $300, and Ralph Distributing of Sikeston contributed $300.

Howard received $250 each from the American Family PAC of Jefferson City; AMI, Inc. of Houston, Texas; and the Missouri Association of Chiropractors.

Contributing $200 were: the Credit Union PAC, First Midwest Bank of Dexter, Stephen Holden of Dexter, the Missouri AFL-CIO, Wayne P. Elliot of Dexter, William H. Bess of Festus, Luecke Distrubing of Poplar Bluff, Memorial Park Cemetery of Columbia, Jim Elliot of Kennett, Dexter Inn, Inc., Lemon's Gravel Co. of Dexter, the MA-PAC of Jefferson City, Fiddlers, Inc. of Dexter, AMEC-PAC of Jefferson City, James Lincoln and Associates of Dexter, and Carl Bien of Dexter.

Among the other PAC contributions to the Friends committee were: Missouri CPA-PAC of St. Louis, $100; Household International of Maryland Heights, $100; Missouri Softdrink Association of Jefferson City, $151.80; Missouri Health Care Association of Jefferson City, $100; SRV-PAC of Houston, Texas, $100; Missouri Insurance Coalition PAC of Jefferson City, $100; and the HBI-PAC of St. Louis, $150.

Howard also reported several in-kind contributions: Autry Morlan Chevrolet of Dexter, $500; Lodge of the Four Seasons at Lake Ozark, $275; Joe Craig of Dexter, $200; and Norman Swafford of Bernie, $125.

Both Howard and Snider have spent money on a variety of campaign needs ranging from postage to telephone expenses to computer expenses, gasoline, signs, advertisements and literature.

There is no Republican candidate in the 25th district.

The district includes the counties of: Stoddard, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Dunklin, Butler, and Wayne.
