2-year-old in shooting remains hospitalized; mother thanks police for efforts

Meghan Moshiri, 2, remained at a St. Louis hospital Saturday recovering from wounds received in a shooting at her Jackson home Monday.

Meghan's brother, Michael Jeffers, 16, and sister, Madison Moshiri, 4, were shot to death and their mother, Katherine Moshiri, was wounded. Police suspect Katherine Moshiri's husband, Mir Shahin Moshiri, 36, shot his family members before shooting and killing himself Monday afternoon.

A joint memorial service for Madison and Michael is being planned. A spokesman for McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson said the date and time will be confirmed no later than Wednesday and will appear in the newspaper.

Katherine Moshiri has been released from Saint Francis Medical Center. Friday she sent the following open letter to the Jackson Police Department:

"Since the events of Monday, Dec. 3, I have been made aware of some unjustified comments that have been made regarding the local judicial system and law enforcement officers. I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight.

"First of all, I would like to thank Cape Girardeau Associate Circuit Judge Peter Statler and all of the personnel who helped me at the courthouse for issuing the order of protection so promptly. They did everything they possibly could and in a very short time.

"The law enforcement officers of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department and the Jackson Police Department deserve nothing but praise; specifically chief deputy Lt. David James, police chief James Humphreys and especially officer John Jordan for driving me to the hospital. A special thank you to Sgt. Scott Eakers for his help and continuing efforts. I have no doubt they did everything in their power, and the outcome had nothing to do with any negligence on their part.

"Words cannot convey the gratefulness in my heart for the gentleman/woman who stopped to pick me up and drove me to the sheriff's department. Without you, I probably would not be here today.

"Lastly, I would like to thank the ambulance/EMTs and the helicopter pilot and team who airlifted Meghan. I will hold you in my heart forever.

"I am so thankful for all of your prayers and I know everyone means well coming to my defense. However, only I know what happened that day; and the police and everyone mentioned above did everything they could.

"Thank you for your prayers.
