MARIONVILLE, Mo. -- Authorities say a good Samaritan was killed when he tried to help drivers involved in an accident in southwest Missouri. The apparent gunman was shot to death by police.

The Springfield News-Leader reports on its Web site that the Missouri State Highway Patrol said a two-vehicle accident happened on the highway on the edge of Marionville.

One man stopped to help the drivers involved in the accident.

But one of the drivers reportedly got out of the vehicle with a shotgun and fatally shot the man who stopped to help.

That driver then walked down the highway and shot at a Marionville police officer.

The officer returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

The officer was taken to a Springfield hospital.

Police have not released the victims' names.
