ST. LOUIS (AP) — A woman and her teenage daughter are found dead in their New Madrid County home, apparent victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Authorities were dispatched Wednesday to the home in Matthews when the two didn't show up for the first day of class at East Prairie High School in neighboring Mississippi County.
Fifty-eight-year-old Jeanice Griffin was in her first year teaching social studies at the school. Eighteen-year-old Kaitlyn Beckett was a junior at the high school.
New Madrid County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Julia York said the bodies were discovered after the school requested a well-being check.
Authorities discovered a gas-powered generator in the home's garage.
