KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An 18-year-old Kansas City man died while trying to swim across a cove at an area lake with three friends, all of whom got into trouble during the attempt.
The Kansas City Star reported Tim J. Nolen drowned and the other three men had to be rescued Saturday afternoon after trying to cross some 250 yards at Longview Lake in southern Jackson County.
Ambulance crews took two of the survivors to hospitals and treated the third at the scene. Nolen remained underwater for about an hour before his body was recovered at 3:40 p.m.
Deputy Kansas City fire chief Norman Larkey said it's too early to know if alcohol was involved. He said even experienced swimmers would have difficulty covering the distance the four men tried to cross.
