160th District incumbent outspending challenger

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Republican state Rep. Peter Myers had spent nearly three times as much as Democratic challenger Donnie Kiefer in their contest for the 160th District House seat.

As of Oct. 24, Myers, of Sikeston, Mo., had spent $49,981 on his campaign for a third term. Kiefer, a Chaffee businessman, had spent $16,871 in his bid to unseat the incumbent.

During the course of the race to date, Myers had raised $62,545 compared to $24,430 collected by Kiefer.

For the final push before Election Day, Myers reported $10,857 in cash on hand, slightly ahead of Kiefer, who had $7,534 in the bank.

The final campaign disclosure reports to be submitted to the Missouri Ethics Commission prior to the Nov. 5 elections covered campaign activity from Oct. 1 through Oct. 24.

During that period Myers raised $9,280. Of that amount, 49 percent, or $4,525, came from Republican Party committees or interest groups, including some representing the banking and health care industries.

Myers spent $20,931, the bulk of which was for advertising.

Most of the $3,490 Kiefer raised came in small, non-itemized donations he received at fund-raising events. He reported just five itemized contributions totaling $1,400. All but one were for the $300 maximum for a House raise, including a donation from the Byrd Township Democrats. The Missouri AFL-CIO gave him $200.

Kiefer spent $5,561, mainly on advertising and a fish fry fundraising event.

The 160th District represents western Scott County and a small portion of southern Cape Girardeau County.
