Southeast Missouri State University's Alumni Association will honor 10 alumni and a faculty member with its annual Merit Awards
This year's recipients are Lewis Edgar Bock of The Woodlands, Texas; Ray F. Cliff of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; Dr. Charles Dart of Ventura, Calif., Dr. Mabel Daugherty of Lakeland, Tenn., Missouri Sen. Jerry Howard of Dexter, Charles Hutson of Cape Girardeau, Mel Kohl Jr. of St. Albans, Mo., J. Dale Meier of Des Peres, Mo., Philip Toia of Marco Island, Fla., and Raymond Vogel of Cape Girardeau.
Dr. Michael Brown, a professor of criminal justice, will receive the Faculty Merit Award.
The awards will be presented on Oct. 20 during Homecoming festivities. The Merit Award dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center.

Alumni Merit Awards are presented by each of Southeast's academic colleges and schools to honor distinguished alumni. The Faculty Merit Award is presented for excellence and distinction in teaching.
Bock is being honored by the Donald L. Harrison College of Business. A Cape Girardeau native, he is a senior account agent with Allstate Insurance Co. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Southeast in 1963.
Cliff is being honored by the Donald L. Harrison College of Business. He spent most of his business career with Procter and Gamble, where he held a variety of positions in sales, sales management and administration. He retired from P and G in 1990 and now teaches English as a second language. He earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Southeast in 1958.
Dart is being honored by the College of Science and Mathematics. He is a board certified doctor in both general and thoracic surgery. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Southeast, graduating magna cum laude in 1953.
Daugherty is being honored by the College of Health and Human Services. She is associate professor emerita of human environmental studies at Southeast. She taught at the school for 24 years. She earned a bachelor of science degree in vocational home economics education, graduating cum laude from Southeast in 1960.
Howard is being honored by the School of Polytechnic Studies. He first was elected to the Missouri Senate in 1990 in a special election. He is currently completing his second full term. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture and biology in 1960.
Hutson is being honored by the School of Polytechnic Studies. He graduated from Southeast in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial technology and business. He is president of Hutson Enterprises in Cape Girardeau. He also serves as president of the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
Kohl is being honored by the College of Science and Mathematics. He is president of Consultant Lubricants Inc. He established the company in 1976. It makes and processes chemicals used in the machining, stamping, grinding and extruding of metal and metal alloys. He graduated in 1967 with a bachelor of science degree in geology.
Meier is being honored by the College of Education. He is executive vice president and principal consultant with Grant Cooper and Associates Inc., an executive search firm headquartered in St. Louis. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1964 and a master of arts in counseling psychology in 1969.
Toia is being honored by the College of Liberal Arts. A private investor, he received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1957. He was employed in the government sector for a number of years. He served in several positions with Chase Manhattan Bank, including senior vice president and a member of the board of directors. He then joined the Dreyfus Corp., where he served as vice chairman for administration and operations.
Vogel, a retired Cape Girardeau lawyer, is being honored by the College of Liberal Arts. He graduated in 1937 with a bachelor of science degree in English and history. He worked as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation before opening a law practice in Cape Girardeau in 1946. While practicing law, Vogel served as a state representative, Cape Girardeau County prosecuting attorney, Cape Girardeau city attorney and as a special assistant to then Missouri Attorney General John Danforth for five years.
Brown, the Faculty Merit Award winner, has taught at Southeast since 1976. He has served as chairman of the criminal justice department for 12 years. He created and directs the Law Enforcement Training Academy, which annually trains more than 150 police officers.
