The Corps of Engineers has awarded a $1 million contract to Shappert Engineering Co. of Rockford, Ill., for the first phase of channel improvements on Walker Branch.

"As recent weeks have proven, flood control is very important for our area," U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson said in announcing the contract. "We must do what we can in advance of flash floods or unexpected high water to mitigate the long term damage. We can't stop it from raining, but we can prepare for its consequences."

The work will consist of constructing a U-frame concrete channel and includes clearing, excavation, backfill, side drains, bridges, removal of sheet piling at William Street and other work, Emerson said.

The work is expected to be completed by March 1995.
