Speak Out: Martin Luther King quotes...

"Nothing pains some people more than having to think."

"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

"If a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live."

"A lie cannot live."

  • Dug,

    I like those. Unfortunately nobody seems to heed them today.

    Especially the "A lie cannot live".

    Lies are what makes the world go around in some circles today. Take for example.... Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

  • Wheels - I liked the quote that violence is not the way to racial justice. Looks like a lot of the BLM people didn't get that memo. The lie quote is also a great one.

    That also..... don't stick your nose in where it is not wanted is a good rule to follow.

    Help may be offered, if one sees the need, if it is refused, understand what no means.

    Some will ask for help, it doesn't always need to be material, sometimes it is only physical or advice they need for a short time. That too cannot be allowed to be habitual, when you see they are coasting and letting you do the work, time to cut it off.

    In response one year while I was bored and needed something to do, I sent out a Groundhog's Day letter.... my sister even threatened me and she had not sent a Christmas letter.

    ````````````````````````````
    A point I was leading up to is that all throughout history, people have known the truths that MLK espoused. I think mankind has been oppressing one another since recorded history. We are given free will by our creator to submit or reject such tyranny in His name. MLK was a mere human cursed with the same sins of all of us but IMO was guided by Him to repeat what had been already revealed.
    As I was reading somewhere, MLK did not ask for or even want the assignment. But somewhere he pulled it out of himself to step up to the plate. And as you mentioned, undoubtedly with Divine Guidance.
    -- Posted by Have Wheels Will Travel - ΑΩ on Sun, Jan 17, 2016, at 11:28 AM
  • To expand on this fear of going into certain areas.
    Black folks avoid certain areas because they are not wanted where certain uncivilized white hoodlum folks hang out. They fear bodily harm or worse.
    Likewise White folks avoid certain areas because they are not wanted where certain uncivilized black hoodlum folks hang out. The fear bodily harm or worse.
    To think this has anything to do with "Privilege" of any kind reflects on one's tunnel vision.
    It has to do with commonsense. Go where you are unwanted and you could be a statistic. Black or white has nothing to do with it.
    There is no question about it as I said before it equates to areas South or North where Blacks or Whites will not go and it has nothing to do with "Privilege" It is pure Racist hate.... White thugs in some cases and Black thugs in others.
  • Well, growing up in N.Carolina in the 50s and 60s I learned all about racial issues. As years passed race relations seemed to improve dramatically for four decades. I can't quite put my finger on it but the last seven or eight years things seem to be getting much worse. What a shame! It's never been about "privilege" it has always been about color (race)! In the end we are all just animals just like lions and tigers. Pretty much the same species but they just don't seem to get along that well together. For too many, it is hard to see through the black, white, red, brown or yellow. Again, what a shame.
    She is too comfortable telling them and that makes her dangerous.
    -- Posted by Iamhere on Tue, Jan 19, 2016, at 10:43 AM
  • They are all "comfortable" with it.
    My personal Trump favorite is his "wall lie" how he's going to build a "beautiful wall" and how the Mexican government will pay for it. And on top of that his ad shows hundreds of Moroccans streaming across a “wall-less” border in Africa and he lies about those being Mexicans.
    Another favorite, that most of them use at one time or another, is the “first day of my Presidency Obamacare repeal” lie. It is impossible for any President to repeal a law on the first day of any term, so they lie about it rather than telling the truth. Which would be something like, “On the first day of my Presidency I will endeavor to obtain Congressional cooperation to begin to review possibilities of arriving at alternatives to the ACA that will be both practical, effective and will provide all of the benefits at hopefully a somewhat reduced cost. Doesn’t have quite the “ring to it” as the lie does.
    Whatever stories Hillary uses are no better or worse.
    Remember that trip Obama sent her on, to Afghanistan I believe it was, where she had to run through a hail of enemy fire to get to her waiting car. I think it was an outrage that the President of the United States would send a member of his top team into danger like that. Has he no consideration..... why she might not even have been here to lie for.... I mean run for the office of President.
  • Common,
    As usual you didn't realize Trump sees things from a business standpoint instead of throwing baseless boneheaded ideas out there like the Obama you love.
    "Mexico must pay for the wall and, until they do, the United States will, among other things: impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options]. We will not be taken advantage of anymore."
    Mexico paying is the epitome of a "baseless boneheaded idea." It's never going to happen and Trump knows it. He is lying completely for political purposes.
    Your "solutions" to get Mexico to "pay" have as much chance of happening as Trump closing mosques, preventing Muslims from entering the US and registering all Muslims (step before making them wear armbands.)
    ATLANTIC CITY — One of Donald Trump's casinos has admitted that it broke the law and violated terms of its license when the developer's father lent it $3.5 million by purchasing gaming chips when he had no plans to gamble, the state Division of Gaming Enforcement said yesterday.
    Through his attorney, Fred Trump bought 700 gray chips, each worth $5,000, in December so that Trump Castle Casino Resort would have enough cash to make an $18.4 million interest payment on its mortgage, the division said.
    There was a budget process in place until Obama became president and Pelosi, Reid and Obama didn't want to talk or show what they were spending money on. So now all we have are debt limit raises and "continuing resolutions".
    There's a lot to be said for that. I just updated the operating system on my phone and I actually took the time to read the "Acceptance" terms that you must agree to. You have no choice or you don't get upgraded.
    In a nut shell you must agree to allow them to record your conversations in texts, emails, etc. You also have to agree to geo-location for certain applications, the permanent storage of data by them and their ability to share it.
    Rick,
    To each his own, that is what makes life interesting. I use a laptop at home a cell phone when I am not. We finally eliminated our land line phone as it rarely would be used. Only desktop computer I use any more is on my desk in the office I once inhabited at the old business the kids now own and operate. I rarely go in there but connect via the internet regularly to help them by doing an audit on the month and final period end closing. This at their request, not my intention to keep an eye on them. :-) Started out to be temporary when I retired but have been asked to continue it, so here I am some 16 years later.
    There is a lot to be said for and against cell phones. Their coming into the market was a welcome necessity in some types of businesses.
    It was an exciting day when we first got business band radios to keep out trucks in contact with the office. Now business could be operated with private conversations, not squawking out to everybody with the short reach of CB radios. Except when you were in certain areas. The equipment was big and bulky and required long antennas with a tower at the home base. Then along came small hand held business communications, finally integrated with cell phones. Now it is pretty much cell phones exclusively and business can be carried on almost anywhere. Service tech has a problem, take a picture and send it to the more experienced service manager and they can have a phone conference on the problem. Down side of this it can take away from their productivity if they are not disciplined enough to recognize the need to use these phones only for business use during business hours, barring and emergency call of course.
    We have come a long way, and I welcome progress. Will readily admit, sometimes it can come back to bite you in the hind side. :-)
    Dug,
    I also do not like some of the things in these agreements and you have stated it correctly, agree to it or you do not use it. I guess it could be explained by this old saying.... it is their vineyard and they can stomp the grapes as it pleases them, but we do not have to drink the sour juice. Might need to add only if we want grape juice, because the suppliers all have pretty much the same policy.
    I have taken the approach, I am soon to be 78 years young and what the hell are they going to do with me? I am doing nothing illegal and if they decided to lock me up for what they might consider an infraction, then so be it, they would have to feed, house and clothe me and in a finer style than many in this country are used to today anyway. :-)
    And a plus, if something was to happen to me, they could use my phone to locate the carcass before it became a public nuisance.
    I am more or less with you on the texting. I will do it occasionally if it is someone I would just as soon not talk to anyway.
    And then there is always that person you tell something to and two days later they come back with, why didn't you tell me that. And you can always show them and say look, I did tell you, now pay attention.
    Hmmmmm..... maybe I should start texting my wife, when I tell her something important.
    To me that is just rude and I have told them so. My grandkids that live with me, their Mom I had to seriously jump abt it. She was supposed to be spending time with them but her face was in the phone all the time. I finally wouldn't allow her to use it while she was here to see the kids.
    It is crazy how attached ppl are to those phones. I can't afford it is why I don't have one. If it is that addicting I don't want one either.
    Some of the text lingo , I have no clue what it means , it might as well be Russian .
    Not that it's anyone else fault but my own for not wanting to learn it , but the Peoples language and English are about my limit , my attention span is not what it was , I'm not sure if my brain is slowing down or if I just don't give a rat's anus anymore .
    Rick
    There are a host of things yet unlearned. Some of which I have not the desire or the time for. Shorthand was one of them and Texting lingo is another. As someone once said regarding apathy, I don't know what it is and I don't care. Pretty much describes the texting lingo. If I text at all, it is in the King's English as it is taught in America and which I ain't all that good at either. I hated English in school and have never got past that.
    Diagramming sentences ranked right up there with hoeing cockleburrs for me. Finally gained some appreciation for English when I listened to Bill Clinton define the meaning of "is". Just in case a man ever decided to cheat on his spouse, he really should think back how good he was at defining things if he got caught.
  • Read this article this morning regarding SEMO's first black graduate. A woman who went to SEMO despite financial hardship, graduated but was not able to teach in Cape Girardeau in 1956 because the students were integrated but the teachers were not. I especially appreciate her attitude and her quote about the situation:
    "She is not discouraged, however. "Acknowledge God and He'll guide your way," she said is her belief."
    A good, quick read on MLK day about a local person who is an inspiration:
