• The way I understood it from several articles recently (there was a great one in Time magazine), the (liberally-slanted) blame for much of Detroit's downfall was placed predominantly upon the selfishness of 'White Flight' that helped create Detroit's downfall.

  Hard to imagine why a group of people would want to flee from gang activities, graffiti, houses in disrepair, crime, etc. Also hard to comprehend why losing such a group of people seemed to encourage the rise of the above.

  After the 'Flight' ... things fell apart more rapidly because there seemed to be less incentive for the remaining citizens to sustain much sense of responsibility.

  So then ... the welfare system grew rapdily (due to the 'Flight'), and seemed to encourage many of the remaining residents to continue down the path of personal and public destruction.
