Speak Out: A program completely out of control EBT Cards

Posted by swampeastmissouri on Fri, Feb 14, 2014, at 12:52 PM:

Please watch this video which shows after an audit conducted by the Missouri Auditor uncovered over $200,000.00 dollars in EBT Fraud that has been committed at casinos and liquir stores in the State. When you release and advertise these types of programs and they are not properly monitoredhttp://fox2now.com/2014/02/11/audit-reveals-welfare-cards-used-at-inappropriate-places/ this happens and it has been going for the past five to six years this is just one State there 49 others as well.

  • Encourage them to use those cards to buy lottery tickets, there's one a gazillion chance they get off welfare and a better chance we get some money back in revenue.

  • That is the problem with the current system in a free society. If you give someone cash or other negotiable entities, it is generally recognized that it is theirs to do with as they please. If someone would rather gamble than buy food, giving them monies or credit with the admonition that it is "only for food" will do little to curb their desire to exchange credit for food into cash for gambling, even if it means trading it at less than face value.

The only way to ensure that food charities are spent on food is to physically give food to the recipients. As we saw with the old commodity programmes, that does not keep them from trading the food on the black market for cash, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, or whatever other desirables they can swap, but it does ensure that they actually do get food. Again, being a free society, what they do with their food is their business.

If you want to get really stringent in ensuring that they actually get food and do not trade it, you resort to soup kitchens. Even then, you need a "no carry-out" policy to ensure the food doesn't get taken out and traded on the street, or otherwise wasted. There again, though, there is nothing that will keep the patrons at the table from swapping items on their plate for items in another's pocket.

That leaves us with what? Force-feeding them?

The simplest and most time-tested approach to providing the basic needs is simply to provide the basic needs: food, clothing, shelter. Giving people money in the hopes they will buy those things does not always work. I'm not saying everyone who is on welfare is there because they are poor money managers -- some really have never had money to manage and some really do simply need a hand up to get them back on their feet. But, the fact remains, there are many who are poor because they simply can't manage money. Giving them more money does not solve their problem. Nor does giving them negotiables that are designed to replace money, as they simply become another form of currency.

The bottom line is, once you give someone something, it is theirs to do with as they please. If you don't want them misspending money, don't give it to them. That's the flaw with the current system. We give people money and then complain because they don't spend it the way we want them to spend it. Too bad. I reckon its none of my business how they spend "their" money. But, I reckon I have the right to petition and campaign to have less of my money taken from me and given them to become theirs.

When I was a kid their was always someone that had peanut butter or corn syrup but drug dealers will have a hard time getting rid of 2000 cases of commodities.

    OJ

Most of them would be broke or dead within a couple of years. But I do believe they should pay back all the support money you received.

  • I suggest the fraud the auditors found was merely the tip of the iceberg.

  • If you are so much better at the job, why haven't you run for state auditor?

    T&T

I didn't say I was better at it quiz kid, but from what I saw they were not catching those who buy food and sell it for a discount and various other person to person areas where fraud occurs.

Why are you so touchy, afraid they'll catch up with you?

  • Coconut,

I didn't think I was getting personal with her, but that sure seemed to trip her trigger.

  • Coconut,

Having been married for 56 years and having two daughters and two granddaughters.... I danged sure am not about to make war on women, I'm smarter than that. And let me assure you, from those 5, I have learned there are at least 5 different ways to handle women. I'll just speak to the granddaughters, the oldest will swap barbs with you all day long and then give you a big hug before she leaves, the youngest, one barb would offend her terribly, but the hug would still be there.

No war on granddaughters at least.... they are highly prized and collectable. ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺

Sorry Swamp, I haven't had time to deal with the OW's today. Had some things to attend to, knock yesterday's ice off things and get the motor home prepared to roll. After a 6 week delay for wife's health reasons we are out of here for the next 6 weeks or so. I have had all of the winter I can stand. I made it as far as Cape today, will visit my brother and then it is back on the road. Be careful on I 55, I haven't been test to drive for almost 60 years now, so, I just drive down the line between the two southbound lanes.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I hold these OW's at about a -2 for bothering me.

One of them now appears to want me to run for office.... see above.

  • Well I see this morning that Obama is considering raising the Minimum Wage to $10.10 Per Hour if Congress don't act on his request. Of course he would use his pen and phone Executive Order issuance. If we are going to operate as a one man show from now on do we need Congress, is this what people are wanting? Never seen it like this before so sad.

  • swamp, as your God Ronald Reagan said once, "there you go again." Well, swamp, there you go again. The raise to $10.10 per hour would only be for employees working for govt contactors and not the entire nation. He can legally do this.
