  • There is no question that all parties are at fault because there are good & bad & just plain stupid in each political party.

The question is how do we fix it now? And what we are currently doing isn't fixing a thing.

  • I agree with A C D. I was polled about community affairs recently. It was all about casino effect on Cape Girardeau. Stupid questions they were, all designed to come out making a casino the savior of the city. Something like: Knowing that a casino would generate boo-koos of money for your children's school, do think......, that would be very best, somewhat best, or meduim best for your childs school?

It is hard relate what you think about a subject via a poll.

  • The only way to change our corrupt government is to make every bill passed to be 100 pages or less, and require every senator & congressman to read the entire bill beofre being allowed to vote on it, and do not allow ANYTHING to be added to the bill that is not related to the bill. For example: if the bill is on unemployment, then it can not have a passage giving a billion dollars to bat research.

  • Glad I'm not the only one who realizes the ease of gearing poll questions in order to obtain the desired answers, Old J.

During Clinton's first campaign, I received (no idea why!) a questionaire from the DNC. Darn, if I hadn't had a brain in my head, I'd have answered every single question just exactly as they were expected to be answered.

Instead of filling out the 'survey,' I wrote a letter to the RNC suggesting that they use the same tactics ... but they didn't. ~sigh~

Wish there were a way we could make that happen, adidas! Those ideas ... especially the Oops-we-need-to-tack-this-other-bill-on-in-order-to-save-time things ... have been bandied about now and then ... ususally during campaigns ... but as we can see, it never seems to pass.

Hmm ... perhaps we could also wish for a ban on attorneys running for public office? Gosh, no more lengthy convoluted hard-to-comprehend lawyer-ese in all the bills ...

    Mom and Adidas

I believe Missouri still works under the rule, that to tack anything on to a bill being considered, the ammendment has to be "Germane" to the issue.

However that appears to be a stretch at times.

    -- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Mon, Jul 5, 2010, at 9:51 AM
  • I somewhat agree with adidas. With the exception there should be a 50 question test about the amendment, also 5 essay questions. The test will be taken with each individual all alone in a room. With the exception of someone monitoring the member of congress to make sure they dont cheat. If they dont score at least 80% then they dont get to vote on the amendment. Also all scores and answers will be posted for all to see.

I would also suggest a law being made that anyone who wants to sit in a position of financial power must have a degree in accounting. Like our Treasurer, the Senate Banking Committee, the head of the IRS, and the numerous czars appointed to head financial committees, etc.

  • The problem is we elect the wrong people to public office. Its our own fault because we are either too stupid or too busy to really care.

-- Posted by voyager on Mon, Jul 5, 2010, at 3:33 PM
  • Adidas,

An accounting degree does not guarantee competence. There are many people out there with accounting degrees that cannot pass the CPA test.

Very good, Mowrangler! Makes too much sense, though ...

adidas! You actually think financial issues should be handled by ... people with knowledge of finances/accounting? What a novel idea!

We generally do, yes. Unfortunately ... our votes are pretty much limited to whoever is on the ballots ... which generally means trying to vote for the 'lesser of two evils,' doesn't it?

Okay then, Wheels ... let's put 'household money managers' (i.e. usually wives) into office instead? Better yet ... anyone who can pass a common-sense test about budgeting, income vs spending, necessities vs desires (vote-for-me perk programs)? But I repeat myself ... ~grinning~

If I pay taxes to the district even though I don't reside there, I think I should have a say in million dollar tax increasing school bonds.

    Old John

I agree. But there might be a little satisfaction if they would turn kids out of high school that can read beyond the 5th grade level.

In our neighborhood the public schools are putting in astro turf for their football fields, and as I understand it, that is about a cool million per pop.

One private school I am aware of looked into it because as the administration reasoned, it would save the $3500 or so they spend annually maintaining the grass football field. My question, since I think I have heard the life expectancy of the astro turf is around 10 years, do they teach math in that school?

You will never get an argument out of me on that one.

I have probsably seen my last football game. My oldest Grandson has graduated high school and the youngest, another family, will most likely never play.

Being a good Grandparent I went to most of the games, but I also graduated... I think.

  • Crackpot, you neglected to say the State of Delaware does not have a sales tax.So if you are going to buysomething, see if you can't wait until the next time you are in Delaware.

Of course. if you buy a car in Delaware and bring it back to Tennessee or MO, you will be expected to pay the sales tax when you register it. States get a little picky about automobiles since they are big ticket items generating a nice hunk of sales tax.

Thanks, Wheels, for the astro-turf math lesson.

Only have known 6 'disabled' people ... 3 on SSI, 3 on SS Disability ... 5 of them could work, but not 'in their field.' 1 SSD recipient even single-handedly built a family room onto his home & another renovated his garage to make it a family room ... out of the 6, only 1 was actually unable to work for a living. Wondering if that's sort of an 'average?'

Aw, adidas ... Except for myself, my entire family are registered Democrats ... some of them I even really like! Feel certain you didn't honestly mean that, though ... should have put a 'wink' or something behind it, so everyone would know it wasn't a serious statement ... just one of those jabs it seems like we're all prone to when it comes to politics?

  • Gee whiz theorist can you not tell when someone is telling a joke?

Frankly my dear I don't give a **** what you think

Guru- you know me better than that- we have had discussions about me being the only Republican in my ENTIRE family. (not to mention non-Catholic!)And you know I wouldn't wish it on my family. Yes I should have put a wink, but you also know darn well that these two (sue Lynn & Theorist) have a corn cob stuck and would have jumped all over me no matter what I said. I could say the sky is blue and they would argue that it is teal, and the Ike would put his two cents in also.

If it weren't for democrats my friend you (nor rick a/k/a cereal...killer) would not be drawing one thin dime of disability. Of course WHY NOT would provide for you since you simpletons like to stick together. WHY NOT would not p--- on your guts if they were on fire if he thought it would cost him a penny. But you guys go ahead and stick together. How long have you been on the govt payroll by the way? Are you a lifer and subsequent generation recipient of govt funds?

-- Posted by howdydoody on Tue, Jul 6, 2010, at 4:17 PM
  • "Frankly my dear I don't give a **** what you think"

Sounded like a simple statement of fact... not a personal attack to me.

Personally in my own day to day life, nothing specific today, I operate under the assumption... this is what I think, or this is what I intend doing, or have done, and if that does not suit your agenda (whomever you might be) that is truly unfortunate. Because I am still going to do what I think is right for me.

    -- Posted by Have_Wheels_Will_Travel on Tue, Jul 6, 2010, at 4:32 PM

    -- Posted by concerned4all on Tue, Jul 6, 2010, at 5:15 PM
  • Howdy, I reread your post. "subsequent generation recipient of govt funds" HECK NO

My great grandfather served his democrat party by representing the state of MO (and I won't say any more than that.)He was an extremely wealthy man.

My grandfather also served the democrat party and was in the medical field. When he retired he served on several Catholic charties. The inheritance was split between the democrat party and Catholic charities. I had two uncles who served in WWII, both lived long lives, one retired from his job at age 60, the other ran his own company all his life. My father (much younger than my uncles) served in the Koran War. He then went to a factory and worked until he took early retirement. He then built houses. He is still alive and now builds furniture to keep busy. My mother's brother was in Vietnam, and involved with that agent orange. He died a painful death shortly after returning home from war. My mother worked all her life until last year, but at age 77 she deserves to finally quit. So how dare you try to insult my family. I have a disability that will guarantee me a long painful death, I certainly did not ask for it, so excuse me if you feel I am draining society and not your beloved Obama, or all the fakers & illegals out there.

    -- Posted by Skeptic1 on Tue, Jul 6, 2010, at 6:12 PM
  • adidas: See what I mean? You cannot comprehend. When I asked if you were a subsequent generation recipient of govt funds, a simple yes or no would have sufficed. I am not judging your family, I am judging you. Glad your family was always self supporting. Most of us have families just like yours. So when someone asks you a simple question don't come unglued. It puts your authenticity in doubt. Have a nice evening.

  • From Neal. ---- Neal who? If it's Boortz, none of this is 100% true. He appears to be an expert in grasping at nebulous phrases and shining a fictitious light on any issue. He even makes Fox News (?) seem "fair and balanced" at times, but not very often.

    ------------

Unemployment claims are up. ----- Of course they are, unemployment is up, due to a recession that started at the beginning of this decade. The first of many blinding flashes of the obvious attributable to Neal.

    -----------

The so-called "recovery" is fizzling ----- Appears to be a personal opinion that is being advertised as a truth. Apparently Neal failed to ask the teachers and policemen that were able to keep their jobs. Nor did he ask the construction workers that now have jobs.

    ------------

US debt at a record percentage of GDP .. and growing ----- Keep in mind the trillion dollars spent on a senseless war in Iraq. As the economy recovers the percentage will be reduced.

    --------------

Private business aren't hiring ... and don't plan to ----- Good managers are taking advantage of the economic situation. They are hiring, and the potential in energy is growing.

    --------------

Government employment growing across the board ------- More Neal BS. Census workers are being laid off. There is no "across the board" hiring.

    --------------

Iran thumbing its nose at further sanctions .. continue work on the bomb ----- Sanctions need time to work. The "Neal's" of the world expect instantaneous gratification. The bomb work is the figment of a paranoid imagination.

    ----------

Dependency on government growing at highest rate since Jimmy Carter ------ More Neal BS. There are new people receiving benefits, and there are people losing benefits. I receive military retirement pay, but do not consider that "dependent on government." Who knows what Neal counts.

    --------------

The United Nations is calling for the dollar to be replaced as the global reserve currency ----- I really do not believe that the UN has any authority or reason to call for any change in currency.

    --------------

Oil leak in Gulf continues with no real end in sight ------- Of course there is a real end in sight, there are 2 parallel wells being drilled to intercept the well casing. There are also caps over the well collection oil.

    ----------------

Taliban cooling their heels and waiting for our July 2011 pull out date -------- If the Taliban were "cooling their heels" the Afghan government would be advancing further. The July date has nothing to do with "pulling out." Starting to reduce numbers does not mean total withdrawl (even Neal should understand that.) Establishing a date to begin drawing down compels the Afghan government to put their house in order.

    ---------------

Tax increases across the board in the US --------- More Neal BS. They are not across the board.

    ------------

The Value Added Tax is on the way! -------- More Neal BS. Congress would have to approve this, and we don't need it.

    --------------

Home sales are down by 30% ---------- Surprise, surprise, it's a recession. As it ends home sales and prices will go back up.

    -------------------

Six months to go before we are hit with the largest tax hike in history ------- The end of the "President Bush tax cuts" was not created by the current administration. The previous administration inserted the cutoff date originally. So President Bush is the author of the "largest tax hike in history."

Hugo Chavez just seized 11 oil rigs owned by a US company and Obama loves him ------ I really see absolutely nothing that proves President Obama "loves him." The whole idea is ridiculous.

    ----------------

Mexican drug gang fight at Arizona border kills 21 ---- Very likely with US supplied weapons, I hope Neal is for elimination of semi and automatic weapons, and close control of dealers and prohibition of gun "shows." It is really satisfying to see that Neal supports rational gun control laws.

  • During the depression a jewish furniture merchant that had always paid in full for her stock was able to buy more furniture at foreclosure sales at rock bottem prices. She then offered the merchandise at never more than ten percent over cost. By the time the economy started to rebound, many of the big operaters were buying from her and selling on time payment. A majortiy of them went bust and she started the process over keeping to the 10 percent rule.

I can't remember the name of the company that is credited to her legacy, but she did prove that a bad economy can be an oppurtunity.
