With Merit: Grant Eudy

Over the next few weeks, the Southeast Missourian will introduce you to five local scholars. National Merit semifinalists scored big on the PSAT. Out of more than 1.5 million juniors who took the test in 2008, 16,000 were named semifinalists. They will now compete for finalist standing by taking the SAT and submitting an application and recommendations -- with the hope of winning a scholarship. First up is Grant Eudy, a state-qualifying high jumper, who placed seventh in Class 3 at the state meet in May. He also participates in activities like science club and Spanish club, and hopes to attend medical school.

What's your favorite school activity and why? Track and field is my favorite school activity. I love the thrill of competition and enjoy the subtle technique and explosiveness required to succeed in high jumping. I also like the camaraderie with the other athletes who run track and the friendships I've developed through the sport.

How do you balance school and extra-curricular activities? I manage my time well.

What is your dream college and what do you plan to study? I hope to go to St. Louis University and major in biochemistry as a base for entering into the medical field.

Who is your favorite teacher and how did they inspire you to learn? Mr. Edwards is my favorite teacher from Notre Dame. He didn't really inspire me to learn or anything; he has a good sense of humor and is a cool guy to be around. Mr. Mosley and Mrs. Ha are also two teachers I've really enjoyed having, but all the teachers I've had at Notre Dame have been great.

What is your most notable academic achievement? I was one of 330 students statewide accepted into Missouri Scholars Academy in 2008 on the basis of PSAT scores and my GPA.

What is the biggest challenge facing your generation? Finding alternative and cleaner sources of energy.

How do you plan to address it? Buying fuel-efficient vehicles and conserving energy in the household.

What is your favorite high school memory? Watching our basketball team win state my sophomore year.

What are your expectations for college? I want to obtain a degree in biochemistry and enter into medical school. Also, I hope to make new friends, participate in a lot of intramurals and maybe continue high jumping in track and field.
