Emily Moore of Cape Girardeau graduated in May from Hofstra University with a bachelor of fine arts degree in theater arts. Hofstra University is in Hempstead, N.Y.

Krewson competes at Beta Club convention

Benjamin Krewson of the St. Paul Lutheran School in Jackson competed in the spelling bee during the National Junior Beta Club Convention in Mobile, Ala. Krewson had won first place in the spelling contest at the state convention in Poplar Bluff, Mo., in December, which qualified him for the national convention. Krewson won second place out of 29 competitors from as many as 14 different states. Krewson is the son of Shirlene Hecht of Altenburg, Mo., and James Krewson of Columbia, Mo.

Students attend academic program

Four local students attended the Missouri Scholars Academy at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. The students spent time in an intensive classroom setting, studying one of four individually selected subjects that included mathematics, science, social studies and humanities. The students who attended the academy were Will Allen of Jackson Senior High School, son of Mark and Elaine Allen; Jackie Crawford of Cape Central High School, daughter of Phil and Jenny Crawford; Katelynn Pensel of Jackson Senior High School, daughter of Rodney and Pam Pensel; and Joshua Vogel of Saxony Lutheran High School, son of Mark and Magdalene Vogel.

Waggener receives PEO scholarship

Laura Waggener, 2013 graduate of Cape Central High School, recently was awarded the Missouri Philanthropic Educational Organization's Chapter B.I. Anniversary Scholarship. Waggener participated in service opportunities at Cape Central, ranging from the annual blood drive to tutoring students through the A+ program. She also helped people in the community through her church and charitable organizations, including the Salvation Army and Special Olympics. Waggener is the daughter of John and Karen Waggener.

Area students graduate from Missouri University of Science and Technology

More than 1,000 candidates received degrees from Missouri University of Science and Technology, in Rolla, Mo., during commencement ceremonies held in May. Area graduates who received bachelor's degrees were Jessie Y. Hahn of Cape Girardeau; Garion M. Lovig of Cape Girardeau; Garrett L. McMillan of Cape Girardeau; Brittany D. Moreland of Cape Girardeau; Keara J. Pringle of Cape Girardeau; Kyle W. Schutte of Cape Girardeau; Robert Z. Zhang of Cape Girardeau; Alex J. Richbourg of Gordonville, Mo.; Tyler P. Engelhart of Jackson; Andrew M. Graham of Jackson; Morgan L. Pensel of Jackson; and Derek G. Gaines of Oran, Mo.

Bollinger awarded scholarships at Truman State University

Alyssa Bollinger of Jackson has been awarded two scholarships from the Truman State University Foundation for 2013-2014 academic year. Bollinger, an English major, received the Dr. Angela A. DeVito Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500, as well as the Kathleen (Bohon) Strickler Scholarship in the amount of $750. Truman State University is in Kirksville, Mo.

Scheibe named to honor roll

Nina Scheibe of Cape Girardeau was named to the University of Kansas spring 2013 Honor Roll. Scheibe is a senior studying bassoon and was named to the honor roll for the university's School of Music. The University of Kansas is in Lawrence, Kan.

Sobti named to dean's list

Sushil Sobti of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list at Washington University for the spring 2013 semester. Sobti is enrolled in the university's School of Engineering and Applied Science. To qualify for the dean's list, students in the school must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.

Dennington named to President's List

Lessley Dennington, daughter of Dr. Don and Marilee Dennington of Cape Girardeau, was named to the President's List at the University of Alabama for the spring 2013 semester. The President's List recognizes students who earn a 4.0 grade-point average on at least 12 credit hours of work. The University of Alabama is in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Dohogne makes President's List

Meghan Dohogne, a McKendree University student from Cape Girardeau, was named to the President's List for exceptional academic performance during the spring 2013 semester. To be eligible for the President's List, a student must achieve a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the term. McKendree University is in Lebanon, Ill.

Area students awarded scholarships to Southeast

The following area students were awarded scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2013-2014 academic year: Andrew Yeakley of Cape Girardeau, who received the Community College scholarship; Tanner Werner of Jackson, who received the Community College scholarship; Michaela Haley of Sedgewickville, Mo., received the Community College scholarship; Katelyn Glodo of McClure, Ill., received the Midwest Achievement award; Brent Forck of Bentn, Mo., receive dthe Regent's scholarship; and Justin Deen of Sikeston, Mo., received the Community College scholarship.

Kissinger participates in mission trip to Dominican Republic

Hannah Kissinger, a senior pre-nursing student at Missouri Baptist University from Fredericktown, Mo., took a mission trip to the Dominican Republic this summer with a team of students and staff. The team partnered with a local missionary to support and strengthen four local church plants in villages in the province of Barahona. Students gave personal testimonies, led church services, participated in door-to-door evangelism, and coordinated children's ministry through Bible studies, skits and sports evangelism. Missouri Baptist University is in St. Louis.

Schafer named to dean's list

Eva Schafer of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list at Butler University for the 2013 spring semester. Degree-seeking undergraduate students at Butler who carry at least 12 academic hours in a given semester are eligible for the dean's list in the college in which they are enrolled. Butler University is in Indianapolis, Ind.

Busch and Burford graduate from University of Arkansas

Taylor Busch of Cape Girardeau and Nathan Burford of Benton, Mo., received their master's degrees during the 2013 spring graduation ceremonies at the University of Arkansas. Busch and Burford received master's degrees in microelectronics. The University of Arkansas is in Fayetteville, Ark.

Students Awarded Scholarships to Attend Southeast

The following area students were awarded scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2014-2014 academic year: Daniel Bollinger of Cape Girardeau received the Dual Enrollment Scholarship; Ethan Gibbons received the University Scholarship; Michaela Penrod of Dongola, Ill., received the Midwest Achievement Award-Transfer; Erin Vargas of Cape Girardeau received the University Scholarship and Education Access Program Merit; Ashley Craver of McClure, Ill., received the Midwest Achievement Award; Ashley Davie of Cape Girardeau received the Community College Scholarship; Andrew Miller of Cape Girardeau received the University Scholarship to attend Southeast; and Emma Steffens of Jackson received the Dual Credit Scholarship.

Williams receives May Teasdale scholarship

Mathus Williams received one of 50 May Teasdale scholarships awarded during the international meeting of United Commercial Travelers of America in Strausburg, Ill. Williams is the son of the late Robert Wendal Williams and Mrs. Jerry (Bambi) Chatman of Scott City. Williams attends Southeast Missouri State University and was named to the dean's list.

Parker graduates with Master's degree

Adam Parker, a 2008 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, graduated with a Master of Arts in Global Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Parker's received his degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. Parker, son of Michael and Tiffany Parker of Cape Girardeau, currently resides in Washington, D.C.

Beasley receives doctorate

Jonathan Beasley of Jackson received his doctorate in organic chemistry from Iowa State University during summer commencement ceremonies. Iowa State University is in Ames, Iowa.

Sprengel earns bachelor's degree

Michael sprengel of Cape Girardeau was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University during spring commencement exercises. Purdue University is in West Lafayette, Ind.

Robison begins pharmacy studies

Rebecca Robison of Jackson recently took part in a white-coat ceremony at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, signifying the start of her four-year study of pharmacy. The white coat is a symbol of professionalism. Robison was one of 242 pharmacy students taking part in the ceremony.

Robert named to Honor Roll

John Robert of Cape Girardeau was honored at Lipscomb University for academic achievement during the spring semeter at Lipscomb University. Robert, a marketing major, was named to the university's honor roll. Lipscomb University is in Nashville, Tenn.

Cook selected as peer mentor

Kristopher Cook of Scott City has been selected as a peer mentor for first-year students at Missouri Baptist University. Cook, a history major, will serve as a peer mentor during the fall 2013 semester. Missouri Baptist University is in St. Louis, Mo.

LeGrand to attend Murray State University

Chleo LeGrand, daughter of Mary and Steve LeGrand of Cape Girardeau, will attend Murray State University this fall and will be majoring in Physical Therapy. Legrand was the recipient of a $500 scholarship from the Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Marine Corps League Auxiliary Unit 426.
